Five steps to check your child for scoliosis

Parents can use the following "Five-Step Observation Method" to initially check for signs of scoliosis in their children. It is recommended that the child remove their top to ensure accuracy of observation.

Five-Step Scoliosis Check

  1. Frontal View (Standing):

    • Observe if the child's shoulders are at equal height.

    • Check if the gaps between the arms and torso are symmetrical.

    • Confirm if the hips (pelvis) are uneven.

  2. Forward Bend (Frontal View):

    • Have the child stand with feet together, hands clasped, and bend forward until their back is parallel to the ground.

    • Check if the chest or ribs are symmetrically raised on both sides, noting any protrusion on one side.

  3. Rear View (Standing):

    • From behind, check if the child's spine is straight.

    • Observe if one shoulder blade is particularly prominent or positioned higher than the other.

  4. Forward Bend (Rear View, Adam's Forward Bend Test):

    • This is the most important step. Have the child turn their back to you and bend forward. Observe if there is any asymmetrical prominence on either side of the back (commonly known as a razorback), which is a key indicator of scoliosis.

  5. Side View (Forward Bend):

    • From the side, observe the child's back curve when bending forward.

    • Check for any abnormal rounded back (hunchback) or localized protrusions.

Daily Auxiliary Observations

  • Clothing Check: Pay attention to the child's clothing, observe if the collar is often crooked, or if the hem of skirts or pant legs are uneven.

  • Walking Posture: Observe the child's walking posture for any noticeable weight shift or limping.

Early detection of scoliosis can effectively prevent potential future problems. If any suspicious signs are found during the check, immediately consult a healthcare professional for a detailed assessment and treatment. Through such observation and intervention, we can help children maintain healthy spinal development and ensure their physical and mental well-being.
