Why does pain keep recurring?

Have you ever experienced this: when shoulder or back pain flares up, it seems to get better after a few days of rest or applying pain relief patches? But as soon as you return to work or resume exercise, that familiar soreness comes flooding back?
Pain keeps recurring often because we only address "the immediate pain" without eradicating "the source of the pain." Here are four core reasons why pain can't be completely eliminated.
The 4 Main Culprits of Recurrent Pain
1. Poor Daily Posture and Repetitive Strain Injury
This is a common ailment in modern society. Maintaining improper posture for prolonged periods, such as:
• Looking down at a phone (commonly known as "turtle neck")
• Prolonged sitting with lack of activity
• Repetitive, singular movements
These habits cause specific muscles to remain tense for extended periods, leading to "chronic cumulative strain." Even if rest temporarily alleviates the pain, as long as these bad habits persist, muscles and joints will soon "strike" again due to prolonged pressure.
2. Rushing Things: Damaged Tissues Not Fully Repaired
Many people, when acute pain (such as sprains or strains) first occurs, rush to resume high-intensity physical work or exercise as soon as they feel "less pain." At this point, the damaged ligaments, muscles, or fascia have not fully recovered. When these fragile tissues are subjected to stress again, it is extremely easy to cause secondary injury, turning acute pain into persistent "chronic old injuries."
3. Natural Degeneration of Body Structure
As we age, our body structure undergoes natural degeneration, such as:
• Joint wear and tear
• Cartilage thinning
• Disc herniation or degeneration
When these supporting structures of the body become unstable, the surrounding muscles must work harder to maintain balance, which can easily lead to persistent chronic joint pain.
4. The Brain Remembers! Intractable "Pain Memory"
This point is most often overlooked. If pain persists for too long and is not properly managed, the nerve pathways in our body become overly sensitive, and the brain can even form "pain memories." At this point, even very minor stimuli can cause the nervous system to amplify the pain sensation infinitely, leading to chronic pain that is extremely difficult to cure.
Recurrent pain is your body's "distress signal." Never ignore it or simply dismiss it with painkillers!
