What is fascia?

Author: Vivian Chak, Registered Physiotherapist

Fascia is a tough connective tissue distributed throughout the body, enveloping our muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels, and internal organs. Fascia not only supports and protects these structures but also provides an environment for gliding and stretching, allowing muscles to move smoothly. Normally, fascia should be soft and elastic, permitting muscles and organs to move without restriction.

Think of fascia like a close-fitting full-body wetsuit. This wetsuit is incredibly flexible, snugly encasing every inch of your skin without restricting any of your movements. However, if any part of this wetsuit becomes too tight or damaged, it can pull on other areas, affecting your freedom of movement and even causing pain.
