What are the most common pain problems experienced by pregnant mothers?
Author: Vivian Chak, Registered Physiotherapist

- Back Pain:
Causes: A pregnant woman's increased weight, especially the enlarged abdomen, shifts the center of gravity and increases the burden on the lower back. Additionally, pregnancy hormones cause ligaments to relax, affecting the support structure of the lower back and increasing the risk of back pain. - Pelvic Pain:
Causes: Pregnancy hormones like relaxin and estrogen cause ligaments in the pelvis to relax, preparing for the baby's passage during delivery. This relaxation can lead to instability in the pelvic joints (especially the pubic symphysis), causing pain. - Abdominal Pain:
Causes: As the uterus grows, the round ligaments supporting it stretch, which can cause sharp or dull pain in the abdomen. This pain is usually more noticeable when changing positions. - Sciatica:
Causes: The enlarged uterus can press on the sciatic nerve, leading to pain, tingling, or numbness extending from the lower back down the back of the thigh, calf, and even into the foot. - Chest Pain:
Causes: During pregnancy, mammary gland tissue proliferates, and breasts enlarge in preparation for lactation, which can lead to breast pain and stretching of chest muscles. - Leg Pain and Cramps:
Causes: Increased weight and increased body fluid and blood volume can lead to increased venous pressure in the legs, causing pain. Nighttime cramps are related to changes in electrolyte balance. - Headaches:
Causes: Changes in hormone levels, altered blood circulation, increased stress, and changes in sleep patterns during pregnancy can all lead to headaches. - Wrist and Finger Pain:
Causes: Fluid retention during pregnancy can lead to increased pressure in the carpal tunnel of the wrist, compressing nerves and causing pain or numbness in the wrist and fingers, which are symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.
